It's hard to remember my favorite holiday gift as a kid--I came from a very poor background, in the deep South--but I do remember getting a Howdy Doody doll-dummy. That is, he wasn't a puppet, but something you could practice ventriloquism on. He had a mouth that moved with a little lever in the back of his head. I was pretty crazy about him, and a similar doll figures in one of the stories in my book "Out There," called "The House of Nightmares."
